Everyone needs to pay attention to the economic development strategy being discussed during the work session. This is going to be used to justify "The District". Tune in to the streaming of the work session if you can not make it to the meeting. This is important.
I can give you a free economic development analysis that works every time. Lower the cost of doing business for businesses within Johns Creek across the board.
If businesses cannot have consistent, year over year profit growth potential, then there is no reason to start or expand a business.
The more rules, taxes, regulations, fees, and other hindrances that we have piled on have gotten so high that we are destroying the incentives to start and operate a business.
We also need to stop looking at businesses as cash cows waiting to be milked for the benefits of the residents.. The relationship can be mutually beneficial in a positive way and should be treated as such.
You're absolutely correct. JCP recently renewed our City biz license, after only obtaining it 6 months prior. We had to pay the whole fee again.
We called Alpharetta, hearing they are more "Business Friendly" and they certainly are.
- Alpharetta pro-rates their business license fees. We would have paid less 50% than Johns Creek.
- Alpharetta has a flat fee for Home businesses, which is additional savings.
- Johns Creek has an administrative fee, flat rate fee, per employee fee & taxes the gross revenue above $20k.
- The real kicker was how encouraging the Alpharetta employee. I was told not once, but twice "Your business will thrive in Alpharetta, we want your business in Alpharetta".
- Interestingly, Johns Creek Herald is located in Alpharetta, and does not pay Johns Creek taxes, along with many other JC businesses.
- Oh and when I called Johns Creek to verify the taxes, I also told her that my business was miscategorized or missing from the city's online business directory. She replied "What difference does it make?" Well I am an internet publisher and would like at least my website link listed. Further more what good is the City's business directory if its not accurate? The element of helpfulness and enthusiasm is missing as well. Its all in Alpharetta.
- Hopefully the Economic development consultant will point all this out.
