Protests continued Sunday night at the site of a $90m million police training center near Atlanta that has become known as "Cop City."

In December 2022, five Antifa members were arrested and held on terrorism charges after clashing with police while camping at the site of the future police training facility. During those protests and the resulting arrests, police recovered flares, bombs, weapons, and gasoline.

Protests initially began in June 2021 when plans for the training center were announced. Several protestors began camping in the forest surrounding the site. In January, things turned deadly when a protestor with Stop Cop City ATL was killed and a Georgia State Patrol trooper was wounded during a conflict near the site.

Renewed protests got out of hand Sunday evening when smoke flames began billowing from the site of the future police training center, and the location was put on lockdown.

A local SWAT unit reported to the site of the training facility as night fell while other officials worked to extinguish the flames and secure the area.

A local reporter claimed to hear something resembling fireworks or gunshots just before 8:00 p.m., but what caused the alarming sound has not yet been confirmed by officials.

As the situation progressed, a massive police presence appeared along Key Road in southeast Atlanta around sunset as protestors actively clashed with local law enforcement. Officials have confirmed that at least one piece of construction equipment had been set ablaze.

Once officials were on the scene most of the protestors scattered into the woods where many have been camping for months. According to an officer, protestors threw sticks and rocks at police, with one protestor going so far as to throw a Molotov cocktail at responding officers.

People took to social media to express mounting frustrations with the rapidly growing crime rates in not only Atlanta but many other U.S. cities.
