Given the challenges with Georgia’s governing bodies over the past years, some Georgians are starting 2023 with a different approach. Rather than trusting their representatives to make decisions in the interest of Georgia’s residents, they are proactively reaching out to share their expectations (and is some cases demands) with their representatives.
One example is Frank Schneider, a Forsyth resident, who this week penned a letter to Congressman-Elect Rich McCormick. In his letter, Mr. Schneider lists 5 areas he believes deserve attention: the U.S. Border, fiscal responsibility and spending control; law enforcement; a focus on election integrity and reforming election laws to rebuild trust in our elections.
In past years perhaps we in Georgia, and Americans in general, have been too quick to abdicate our responsibilities for active, involved citizenship. Now people from all walks of life, are once again willing to stand up and be heard, and unwilling to simply trust that decisions will be made in the best interests of their lives and families.
A republic (from Latin res publica 'public affair') is a "state in which power rests with the people and their elected representatives; specifically a state without a monarchy."
In 1787, on the last day of the Constitutional Convention, a lady asked Dr. Benjamin Franklin, “Well Doctor what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Dr. Franklin replied, “A republic if you can keep it.”
If Mr. Schneider and his fellow Georgians are an indication, they intend to keep it.
Grassroots efforts matter. Your representatives listen to rhetoric, party politics and compromised industry hacks UNLESS they actually hear from those they are supposed to represent. We all know loudmouths who gave the impression they spoke for many when, in fact, they were just the only voice in the room so they got attention. Silence is Agreement in this day and age. Speak up. Tell your representatives what matters to you, your family and your community. It is likely NOT what DC or even local government elites are pushing.
Enough of the population need to give voice. Numbers enough to make the officials worry The People are waking up!??
