In the earlier hours of Wednesday morning in Israel - late Tuesday in the U.S. - a deal has been struck between Israel and Hamas, at least for now, but the war is far from over.

The Israeli cabinet approved a proposed deal to secure the release of some hostages that Hamas has been holding in Gaza in exchange for a temporary pause in the conflict.

The arrangement is expected to secure the release of up to 80 of the more than 239 hostages Hamas has taken hostage since Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist raids when Hamas killed 1,400 civilians inside Israel.

The deal calls for Hamas to release 50 hostages in groups over the first four-day pause. Israeli would release roughly 150 Palestinian women and children in Israel’s custody in their prisons. Hamas could potentially release another 30 hostages during a future four-day pause.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued that the initial temporary pause would not mean the end of the conflict.  He fought for the IDF resuming its offensive against Hamas even after this first phase.

"I want to clarify. We are at war and will continue to be at war until we obtain all our objectives, to destroy Hamas and to return all our captives and missing persons," Netanyahu stated. "We will also ensure that there won’t be any entity in Gaza that will threaten Israel."

Israel will allow around 300 humanitarian aid trucks per day to enter Gaza from Egypt. More fuel will also be allowed in during the pause

During the second phase,Hamas could release dozens more women, children and elderly people. The Israeli government said it would extend the pause for every additional ten hostages released.
